Winter cold will soon give way to the extra sun of the warmer months, and what better way to take advantage of Twickenham and Southwest London's best seasons than by getting on the water and learning to row?
Whether you've been wanting to get into the sport for some time or just happened upon us while trying to find a new group social sport, learning to row at Twickenham is a fantastic way to get into the sport. There are many great reasons to learn to row, but several unique benefits point to why you should learn to row with us!
If you're already convinced, check out the TwRC Spring/Summer Learn to Row schedules for Adults and Juniors, and sign up. Otherwise, read on below for what you can expect from learning to row at Twickenham.
The Best Stretch of the Thames

Rowing at Twickenham provides both a scenic and steady part of the river, perfect for learning how to row. You'll get a sense of this as you cross from the Twickenham Riverside over the pedestrian bridge to Eel Pie Island where our boat house and training facility is located.
You'll be rowing a quad (that's what we call a 4-person sculling boat) under that bridge and into the wider stretch of the river. A pause near Radnor House gives a clear bit of river for boats to do their drills before heading toward Teddington Lock. There you'll spin the boat and come down the Surrey bank of the river and the backside of Eel Pie Island heading toward Richmond before turning back to the boat house.
This stretch of the river is remarkably calm and provides an excellent setting for those new to rowing as compared to some of the rougher stretches of the river that can be frustrating to manage even for more experienced rowers.
Pro tip: Radnor Gardens offers a great vantage point for family or friends to have a coffee and a pastry and catch a glimpse (and snap a pic if you're into that) of you and your crew. If a pint and roast is more their vibe, our crews briefly pass by the White Swan's outdoor seating every time we come back in from a training session.
The TwRC Community

We are a community club at heart and that carries through into everything we do. From the professional coaches, to volunteer assistants, to the club members you see around the boat house, you'll quickly find that the Twickenham RC community is welcoming and excited to help you embark on your rowing journey.
The Learn to Row groups of year's past have added to this community themselves, organising post-training meals and drinks with their classmates at one of the restaurants or pubs near the boat house. It's not uncommon to finish the Learn to Row programme with several new friends to go alongside your new rowing skills!
Over 165 Years of Rowing Experience
That community has been fostered for a long time. Founded in 1860, Twickenham Rowing Club is the third oldest rowing club on the Thames. That history includes rowers who have represented the club and Great Britain while competing at the highest international levels of the sport. It also includes countless members who pursue rowing simply for the love of it.
What does this mean for your Learn to Row experience? It means that whatever your rowing goals are - hobby or high-level competition - we can help you achieve them.
Advancing Beyond Learn to Row

Our Learn to Row programme is designed to give you the introductory skills and knowledge to carry on with the sport at whatever level you wish to pursue. Twickenham is unique in that we off
er immediate club membership and placement into our Development "Dev" Squad for Learn to Row graduates who show sufficient proficiency over the introductory classes.
As you and your Learn to Row classmates move into this Dev Squad, you'll begin a training programme that continues to build technique and fitness on the water, the erg, and in the gym. Past L2R grads have moved into Dev Squad for a season (roughly a year), then progressed into our Senior Men's or Women's Squad which compete at the highest levels of club rowing. Others have chosen to move into our Master's or Club squads or continue to refine their skills staying in Development a little longer.
And as a member of TwRC you'll have access to the gym outside of Dev Squad training and you'll be able to join us for social events like our weekly Wednesday Club Night Dinners and monthly social events like our Quiz Night.
