Twickenham Regatta Recap: Seniors squads succeed in big boat events throughout the day

Twickenham earn five wins in the Open and Women's events


Twickenham's crews came to win on their home stretch of the river in the Open and Women's events at the 103rd Twickenham Regatta on Saturday. The heavy boats picked up wins across five categories, mostly raced by the senior squads with additional entries from Junior crews and mixed Seniors/Masters crews.


Twickenham follows a narrow semi-final win with a dominant final in the Open Eights

The Senior Men's Eight crew of Ben Haworth (stroke), Tom Baldwin, Jonny Searle, Declan Percival, George Scott, Steve Parker, Rourke Richardson, and Hugo Thomas (bow) with Emily Cramby coxing came into the semi-final with a plan for a strong race start. That plan saw the crew fall behind vs Vesta (Bayati) early before making up group to take the race by 1/2 length.

In a quick regroup back on at the club, the crew discussed a change to the race start and went back out for the final, implementing it with great success. Flipping the script from the first race, the Twickenham crew got off to a strong start vs Vesta (Ravenscroft) cruising to victory in the penultimate race of the day.


Semi-Final: Twickenham over Vesta (Bayati) by 1/2 length

Final: Twickenham over Vesta (Ravenscroft) by 5 lengths


Twickenham take the straight final of the Women's Coxless Fours

In a straight final vs Putney Town, the Twickenham senior women's crew of Abi Thompson (stroke), Chantal Ball, Krysia Weir, Lexi Bothamley-Dakin (bow) racing in Helen Brown were very close through the first half of the race, after which Twickenham pulled ahead and held on for the win.


Final result: Twickenham over Putney Town by 2 1/2 lengths


Mixed Seniors-Masters crew wins the straight final of the Open Coxless Fours

In a straight final vs Peterborough City, the Twickenham's mixed Senior and Masters crew of Eoghan Beamish, Rory Bryant, Wesley MacCabe, and Steve Parker took the event.


Final result: Twickenham over Peterborough City by 2 lengths


Two Twickenham crews advance to final of the Women's Quads

An all-TwRC final emerged in the women's quads as the senior squad crew of Livi B-Dakin (stroke), Alice Ashby, Emily Harrison, Elizabeth Gilbert (bow) in Di Ellis and the junior squad crew of Pippa Clark, Summer Christien, Skye Brasher, and Violet Ferris both emerged from quarter-final starts.



Against Bournemouth University, the Twickenham (Harrison) crew won by 4 lengths, moving on to face a Sons of the Thames crew who started in the semi-finals. Winning by 1 3/4 lengths, the crew advanced to the finals.


On the other side of the event's draw, the Twickenham (Ferris) crew won easily against Globe RC, advancing to face a Vesta crew who also started directly in the semi-finals, winning by 4 1/2 lengths.


In the final the senior Twickenham crew took the event by 4 lengths.


Quarter final results: Twickenham (Harrison) over Bournemouth University by 4 lengths and Twickenham (Ferris) over Glove RC easily.

Semi-final results: Twickenham (Harrison) over Sons of the Thames by 1 3/4 lengths and Twickenham (Ferris) over Vesta by 4 1/2 lengths.

Final results: Twickenham (Harrison) over Twickenham (Ferris) by 4 lengths.


Twickenham picks up an early win on the day in the Open Coxed Fours

Twickenham entered two senior men's 4+ boats in the Open Coxed Fours category. The crew of Declan Percival (stroke), Hugo Thomas, Vlad Opanasiuk, Charlie van den berg (bow), and Andy Dobson (cox) rowing in Colin Hunt had a draw directly to the semi-finals where they edged out Sons of the Thames by a length. In the final, they went up against a Putney Town squad that had advanced to the final off a 2 1/2 length win in their semi-final. The Twickenham crew turned it up another level for the final to secure the victory.


Also entered in the event, the scratch crew of Marshall Fleming (stroke), Luke Dyde, Alastair Copland, and George Popplewell (bow) with Emily Cramby coxing, took the lead off the start in their quarter-final but the lack of training together caught up with them quickly as Bournemouth University overtook and ultimately won the heat.


Quarter-final result: Twickenham (Fleming) falls to Bournemouth University by 3 lengths

Semi-final result: Twickenham (Percival) over Sons of the Thames by 1/2 length

Final result: Twickenham over Putney Town by 2 lengths


A close second place finish for Twickenham in the Women's Double Sculls

The women's double sculls featured two Twickenham entries. In the first round Twickenham's junior crew of Pippa Clark and Violet Ferris fell to Sons of the Thames by 3 lengths.


With a draw directly into the quarter-finals, Abi Thomson (stroke) and Isabel King (bow) dispatched of Royal Holloway easily to move into the semi-finals against Auriol Kensington which Twickenham won by 1 1/2 lengths. In the final vs Sons of the Thames, Twickenham (King) narrowly lost out on taking the event final by just 1/2 length.

Quarter-final result: Twickenham (King) over Royal Holloway (UL) easily

Semi-final result: Twickenham (King) over Auriol Kensington by 1 1/2 lengths

Final result: Twickenham (King) falls to Sons of the Thames by 1/2 length


Two Twickenham entries fall early in the the draw in Women's Sculls

In the most crowded event of the day, Twickenham raced two Women's Singles entries on the day. Against a competitive field both entrants fell in their first races as Twickenham junior Summer Christien lost to Fairlop and Twickenham senior Rebecca West lost to Globe.


First round result: Twickenham (Christien) falls to Fairlop, easily

Second round result: Twickenham (West) falls to Globe, easily



A DNF and capsize for Twickenham in the Open Sculls

In a crowded field for Open Single Sculls, Twickenham entered one boat. Unfortunately an equipment failure with the rigger resulted in a capsize and a DNF.



All in all, a successful day for Twickenham in the open events as crews look ahead to the next events with the senior men and women at Met Regatta next weekend.
