Enjoying the perfect conditions that the Cote d'Azur offers in October Twickenham's masters men bagged second place in Toulon's home regatta in the coxed quad category. Coastal rowing is somewhat new territory for Twickenham and finding themselves up against unfamiliar clubs such as Cassis, Marseille and Monaco added to the excitement.
There was little time for the crew to get familiar with the wider bodied coastal rowing boats before making their way to the start line but the very agreeable flat conditions enabled Twickenham to get stuck into the two lap 6km race from the off. Some excellent steering around marker buoys by cox Tim Hirst and some determined rowing by Adi Pierce, James Watson, Phil Banergee and Danny Fitzgerald helped Twickenham creep through the six boat field to take a firm grip of second place with clear water ahead of the chasing pack. Eventual winners Toulon proved too strong to haul in and were worthy winners of the gold medal.
Masters Women Gilly O'Beirne and Meg Obenshain contested the double scull category and found themselves in medal contention after the first 3km lap. Unfortunately disaster struck with Gilly sustaining an arm injury forcing them to retire from the race.
