Twickenham Regatta Recap: Three Masters' Event Wins on the Day

Four boats also finished in second place and a mixed Senior/Masters boat won an Open Fours event

It was a busy day for the Twickenham Masters squads where not only did the crews compete in 17 Masters events, but most rowers also volunteered before and after their races to keep the regatta running smoothly.

First Place Finishes

Sarah Neville picked up two of the three wins for her efforts in both the Women's Masters B/C Single Sculls and alongside Spike Pullen in the Mixed Masters C/E Double Sculls.

Another installment of the friendly rivalry with Kingston in the Women's Masters D/E Eights

Building on their success at Marlow Spring Regatta, the Master's Women's 8+ (category D) boat with Abi Bray (stroke), Kathy Billings, Faith Forster, Pia Kemppi, Gilly O’Beirne, Janet Holt, Rosie Creer (bow) and Andy Dobson coxing faced an agonising 7 second countdown to live through before they could push off with all their power to wind up the rate to just under 40.

As the crew lengthened they began to eat into Kingston’s head start. From about midway down the course, cox Andy Dobson was calling out the Kingston seat numbers as they did several pushes to work their way up the seats.

Fantastically loud support from the bank spurred the crew on further, finally crossing the line with their bows a narrow 1/3 of a length in front. A much awaited win for many in the crew and a first pot for Vicki, several firsts at Twickenham and most importantly perhaps, a much-celebrated birthday win for Gilly O'Beirne!

Final result: Twickenham (D) over Kingston (E) by 1/3 length

Next up for the crew is the Reading Amateur Regatta.

Sarah Neville Cruises to Victory in the Women's Masters B/C Single Sculls

With a spot directly into the semi-finals, Sarah Neville won easily against a Poplar Blackwall (B) who had won their quarter-final match up easily. In the finals, Neville won easily against Reading (C) to claim the event.

A High-Rated Finals Win in the Mixed Masters C/E Double Sculls

As a category E entry, the doubles team of Sarah Neville (stroke) and Spike Pullen (bow) rowing in Gabi Fell had a 15 second head start against the Category C entry from Sudbury, making for a relaxed race and an easy win.

The final against Maidenhead's category E entry was made more tense with Sarah forgetting to bring the rate down from 42, and "nearly killing off Spike." Despite this they won ugly against a determined opposition from Maidenhead.

Final result: Twickenham (E) over Maidenhead (E) by 1 1/2 lengths
